Frans Hals, c. 1623Frans Hals was a revolutionary portrait painter during the Dutch Golden Age. Best known for his portrayal of the residents of his native town, Haarlem, Hals created narratives through his subjects’ facial expressions and body positions. Hals’ painting style was characterized by loose brushstrokes and natural light that brought a sense of life to his portraits.
