Scenes from across the history of the Tour de France—arguably the world’s most prestigious and difficult cycling race. The Tour began in 1903 and has been run every year since, with the exception of during World Wars I and II.
Over the course of three weeks in July, professional teams compete while covering over 2,000 miles—including stretches of flat land and mountainous inclines. At the end of the race, in Paris, whoever has the lowest cumulative time for each day-long “stage” wins the coveted yellow jersey (maillot jaune).
