Italian painter, Michelangelo Caravaggio, was a talented artist who lead a tumultuous life. Orphaned at only eleven, Caravaggio became an artist’s apprentice. His works - whose subject matter were mostly young, nude men as angels, musicians, or mythological figures - were done using Caravaggio’s own technique of “enebrism” - using shadows to emphasize the light. Despite his success, Caravaggio was troubled and, often drank, got into brawls. In fact, he had to flee Rome after killing a man in a duel. His works, however, inspired many artists after him - he has been called the “father of modern art”.
