The Ten was an artists’ group formed in 1898 by American artists John Henry Twachtman, J. Alden Weir, and Frederick Childe Hassam. Dissatisfied with the conservative nature of American art at the time, the three artists recruited seven others from Boston, New York City, and elsewhere on the East Coast to make the ten. The groups intent was to create their own artists society anchored around the then innovative style of Impressionism, and that valued imagination and originality.
