No criminal act is more alluring than the theft of a work of art from a museum—not that we condone it. The works in this collection have once been stolen from museums, galleries, or personal residences. Though the proper ownership of such artifacts is usually unmistakable, in other cases—when decades of absence have allowed the works to filter back into the legal market—it’s not so easy.
