1907 Salon d'Automne

The Salon d’Automne (Autumn Salon) was established by a group of artists in 1903 as a progressive alternative to the conservative Paris Salon, and, to a lesser extent, the juryless Salon des Indépendants. It was understood as a showcase for innovation, that also remained mindful of the commercial interests of the artists it exhibited.

The 1907 Salon featured thousands of works from hundreds of artists, and stands out from previous and subsequent exhibitions because it included the largest posthumous exhibition of Paul Cézanne’s works since his death the year before. This Cézanne retrospective had an immediate and profound impact on young artists in Paris at the time, including Picasso, Georges Braque and Henri Matisse.
