These six landscapes, all filtered through realism, represent the diversity of nature available to nineteenth century Russian painters. Their creators also exemplify the path taken by most artists of the time and place: educated at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, while finding discord with the establishment later in life. For example, Arkhip Kuindzhi, whose breathtaking Red Sunset on the Dnieper (1905–1908) anchors this playlist, was fired from the Academy for supporting student protests.
