English artist, George Stubbs - known widely for his paintings of horses - had a passion for anatomy. Stubbs spent months dissecting horses before illustrating and publishing his collection of drawings in “The anatomy of the Horse”. The public recognized his skill - aristocratic patrons saw that his depiction of horses were more accurate than his predecessors - and his career set off. Stubbs painted other animals as well - like zebras, lions and kangaroos. In fact, for most eighteenth century Britons, these paintings were their first glimpse at many of these exotic animals.
