Edward Hopper was one of the defining artists of 20th-century Realism. He is perhaps best known for painting urban scenes portraying human isolation in modern life, but he also found inspiration in the landscapes of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he spent his summers and had a studio. The sea was also a powerful metaphor for the artist, as seen in his almost surrealist painting Rooms by the Sea.
