John Singer Sargent

John Singer Sargent, an American artist who lived in Europe, was considered one of the leading portrait painters of his generation. His depictions of aristocratic figures were praised for their ability to reveal each subject’s individuality and personality through the canvas. At the Paris Salon of 1884, Sargent’s portrait of Madame X dressed in a revealing gown drew criticism for its scandalous nature. Even though this diminished his reputation temporarily, Sargent regained success through his landscape scenes painted toward the end of his career.
