Diego Velázquez - an accomplished painter during the Spanish Golden Age - was best known for being the leading artist of King Philip IV’s court. His portraits of the royal family brought him fame for their realism and intricacy. Of the works created during his time in the court, none were more revered than “Las Meninas”. This work was coined Velázquez’s masterpiece, and he even included himself - painting a portrait of the King and Queen - within the iconic scene.
