Pieter Bruegel—a Netherlandish painter, printmaker, and draftsman—specialized in creating busy, colorful, and sometimes comical landscape scenes, depicting the everyday lives of working people. Bruegel’s subject matter earned him the nickname, “peasant Bruegel,” although in reality he came from a large and renowned southern Netherlandish family of artists who were active across the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
