Frans Hals

Frans Hals was a revolutionary portrait painter during the Dutch Golden Age. Best known for his portrayal of the residents of his native town, Haarlem, Hals created narratives through his subjects’ facial expressions and body positions. Hals’s painting style was characterised by loose brushstrokes and a use of natural light, that together brought a sense of life to his portraits.
