The founder of the Hudson River School, Thomas Cole’s luminous oil paintings of American landscapes capture what many in the mid-19th century saw as nature so beautiful and sublime that it brought its viewer closer to god. Although born in Britain, Cole loved his adopted country, America, and its celestial, glowing landscapes that he sought to capture on canvas.
