Magnum Masters: Elliott Erwitt
As a child of Russians born in Paris, with significant time spent in both Milan and Los Angeles, it is only fitting that Elliott Erwitt’s humorous photographs expose absurdity and irony across the globe. Erwitt first worked as a commercial photographer, completing projects for Standard Oil, the Farm Security Administration, and magazines (Collier’s, Look, and Life). In 1953 he joined Magnum, contributing works that poke fun at politics, high society, and, notably, the elite art world. His ridiculous altar-ego, André S. Solido (initialed A.S.S.), is a beret-wearing, high concept contemporary photographer, whose work Erwitt publishes and exhibits separately. His work is generally meta, sometimes displaying obvious ironies, and other times requiring deeper analysis from his viewer.
