The English painter and poet, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, helped establish the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood—a group of artists who treated religious, moral, and medieval subject matter with a nonacademic approach. Rossetti’s works were characterized by their sensuality and a subject matter focused on medieval revivalism. Rossetti was known as an eccentric and sometimes troubled man, but nevertheless, exuded his powerful personality through his art, creating works that went on to inspire a new style for the second wave of Pre-Raphaelitism.
