The Phillips Collection was founded in 1921 in Washington, DC as America’s first Modern art museum, and has since inducted earlier works by Impressionists and Old Masters. The museum was founded and run by art collectors and critics Duncan Phillips and Marjorie Acker Phillips until their deaths in the 1960s and 1970s. Phillips (Duncan) curated the museum’s galleries in a revolutionary manner: instead of presenting works chronologically, he arranged works from disparate times and places in conversation with one another, according to theme.
