The Kanō School—named for Kanō Masanobu (1434–1530)—refers to a Japanese painting tradition that lasted upwards of 300 years, between the 15th and 18th centuries. The secular paintings ranged broadly in subject matter and presentation, but are generally characterized by their adoption of Chinese paint handling, color sensibilities, and Zen philosophy. Kanō painters were generally financially secure, as their works were in fashion with Japan’s wealthy classes, who regularly commissioned them.
