Women in the Paintings of John William Godward

The majority of John William Godward’s paintings feature beautiful, young women dressed in Classical attire of Ancient Greece and Rome, and set against a painstakingly detailed landscape. Not much is known as to why Godward chose this subject matter, but the women in his work act not as inhabitants of their landscape, but more like masters of the scene.
