Synthetism is a method of painting that was founded by Paul Gauguin and Émile Bernard in the 1880s. The method emphasized two-dimensional flat patterns which completely broke away from the method of the time, Impressionism. Synthetic artists relied more upon their memory rather than painting from sight.
