James Tissot was a French painter and illustrator best known for his paintings depicting the life and culture of late Victorian society. Tissot exhibited his work in the Paris Salon at the young age of twenty three—he was admired by the contemporary society at the time, for his cheerful, modern genre paintings of stylish women in their everyday lives, as well as scenes from the Bible. Tissot rose to the top of the Paris art world scene, maintaining a very successful career until 1871, when he was forced to move to London due to the turbulent events of the Franco-German war, and his involvement with the Paris Commune.
