John Constable was an English Romantic painter known for his realistic landscapes of the Suffolk countryside, where he was born and raised. He was able to develop a unique style that combined his objective studies of nature, infused with a deep personal understanding of the countryside in which he grew up. Unlike most traditional landscape artists of the time, who traveled in search of the perfect picturesque scenery, Constable never left England. Instead, he choose to draw his inspiration from the only place he’d ever really known. He sought to truly appreciate the surroundings in which he was in—depicting the humble scenes of England’s cultivated land and agriculture. Constable’s emphasis on naturalism distinguished him from the rest of his contemporaries. Today, he is considered one of England’s greatest landscape painters.
