After Wassily Kandinsky’s painting ‘Last Judgement’ was rejected for an exhibition in 1911, a number of artists, including Kandinsky, Franz Marc, August Macke and Alexej von Jawlensky came together to form ‘The Blue Rider’ (Der Blaue Reiter) - an influential group committed to artistic experimentation and the promotion of the spiritual value of art. This collection illustrates the group’s interest in color as well as the natural world, which the group celebrated as free from the corruption of their own time.
