Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich - a German artist of the Romantic movement - considered nature to be the central focus and most essential subject in his paintings rather than simply a backdrop or filler on the canvas. In his works, the human presence was reduced in perspective to his expansive landscapes. To Friedrich, nature was more than a beautiful view - he urged his viewers to extended its physical bounds, and to seek spirituality through the contemplation of nature. Sadly, Friedrich’s work was largely misunderstood during his lifetime, and it was not until the late twentieth century that he regained the reputation of an internationally regarded painter and great influence during the German Romantic movement.
