Francisco de Goya: Black Paintings

Goya’s Black Paintings are a collection of frescoes originally painted on the walls of his home in Madrid, where he spent the final years of his life. Many art historians attribute the disturbing imagery and dark palette of the Black Paintings to Goya’s illness and physical decline, concern about the political and social future of Spain, and increasing doubts about his religion as he came to terms with his own mortality. They are currently housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
