Although most of his career was spent in Rome, Nicolas Poussin was considered the leading artist of the French Baroque style. His works - mostly historical paintings with religious or mythological themes - were known for their narrative clarity, dramatic scenes, and Poussin’s blend of the vibrant Renaissance style with the standard excellence, and calculated design of classic antiquity. After his death, Poussin was highly regarded among artists for reviving the traditions of classical art and the masters of the Renaissance, while still achieving originality through his poetic and visionary paintings.
