Fra Angelico

One of the greatest Italian painters of the fifteenth century, Fra Angelico - known for most of his life as Fra Giovanni - was described by a fellow artist as a “rare and perfect talent”. Fra Angelico’s works reflected a serene, religious attitude with strong classical influences, pioneering many of the stylistic trends that distinguished the early Renaissance. At every stage of his career, he remained at the forefront of artistic innovation in Florence, and not long after his death, he was praised as “the Angelic Painter”. Fra Angelico’s life and work has been celebrated for centuries, yet only until recently has his major influence on the development of European painting been fully acknowledged.
