Bryan Byczek

For his latest exclusive commission for the Meural platform, artist Bryan Byczek explored his own memories - strong and faint - to create a series of mesmerizing, abstract moving artworks.

Here, he reveals how the series came about, both in his mind and on the screen.

In the Beginning

The final look and aesthetic of the finished product came later, it wasn’t something I visualized and then reversed engineered. I just knew I wanted to play with some imagery tied to my memories and experiences in some way and see where it took me. I liked the idea of taking seemingly banal pics I took of places and people important to me, or of trips I took that I have a hard time remembering and manipulating them. The image above illustrates the first stage - just beginning to collect and then overlapping.

Bending and Stretching

For my previous collections, SNST and Visage, I increased saturation or color replaced, but here I went for black and white and started stretching images. I liked where it was going and started to realize the actual bending of these pics was symbolic of how these experiences exist in my mind - perceptions shifting and time and memory bending out shape.

Towards a Structure

Now, it’s about working through layers and seeing where the right balance is between interesting negative space and complete visual mess. It’s here in the process I started to realize I need some formality and structure and I liked the idea of ribbons or blurry prisms.

Nearly There

So to achieve that I started to play with transparencies and motion blurs to take the “mess” into something that resembled more of an abstract timeline. After some playing around with contrasts and balances I got to a good place with the final image.

Adding Movement

I’ve never played with movement in my art before and I thought this could be an apt subject to try it on. I’d been tinkering with an app called Pixeloop on my iPad and figured out a way to make these precise linear motion loops, I’m really pleased with the final results!
