Brooklyn Museum, New York City, USA
When it was first conceived in the 1890s, The Brooklyn Museum was supposed to be the largest art museum in the world. Although it never achieved this goal, the institution boasts an impressively large and even more impressively wide-ranged collection of work. The museum is particularly strong in art from Ancient Egypt, Africa, and the United States. The Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art was established in the museum in 2000 and is dedicated to preserving and displaying work tied to the 1970s feminist art movement. Located on the North-Eastern corner of Prospect Park, the museum was difficult to access from Manhattan until the 1920s, when subway stations expanded into Brooklyn. This lead to a boom in the museum’s popularity, position in the art world, and funding. Placed in a neighborhood historically occupied by Jewish people and people of color, the museum strives to appeal to local audiences.
