The Shanghai School emerged in the late 19th century during a turbulent time in Chinese history, shortly after the First Opium War and the Taiping Rebellion. Painters of the Shanghai School were among the first to break with Chinese painting tradition, and explore new pictoral modes, characterized by bright color and exaggerated forms.
