American Impressionism
Impressionism emerged in the 1860’s in France with artists like Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas. The popular style made its way to the American public in 1880, with the first French Impressionist exhibition in New York City. Shortly after, American Impressionism emerged as a style of painting related to it’s European predecessor, and was practiced by a group of artists in the United States through the late 19th and into the early 20th century. Artists like Thomas Wilmer Dewing, Theodore Robinson, and J. Alden Weir began to paint in the style that had won over many audiences before, with it’s dreamy, loose brushstrokes and vivid colors.
