Australia’s ‘Heidelberg School’ emerged in 1891 as a group of “plein air” (outdoor) painters who drew inspiration from European Impressionists and Naturalists. Heidelberg artists distinguished themselves from their European counterparts with glowing, ochre-based palettes that capture Australia’s harsh landscape, raking light, and rugged terrain.
