Hans Thoma painted natural landscapes, domestic scenes, and mythological and biblical vignettes in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Working just before the advent of German Expressionism, Thoma aligned himself with the pictorial values of early German master painters—accurately proportioned figures, harmonious compositions, and realistic color palettes. Though he is rarely categorized within a specific movement, he is most comparable to the Pre-Raphaelites. Neither widely successful nor a typical “starving artist,” Thoma became locally well-known in Munich before his death in 1924 at 85.
