During the industrious turn of the 19th century, Slovak painter Jozef Hanula solidified his staunch patriotism through paintings that embedded religious references into images of Slovak life—and visa versa. Hanula strove to display the daily affairs of Slovakians through scenes of religious events, politicians, and farmers. While he mostly embraced Realism, some of his work varies and seeps into a more Modernist style; large sweeps of the brush create form without concealing its strokes.
