Rudolf von Alt
Rudolf von Alt’s love of landscape painting was nurtured from the day he was born. The son of a lithographer and brother of a painter, Alt embarked on many hiking trips from his home in Austria through the European alps. After a trip to Venice in 1833, at age 21, Alt began painting architectural structures as well as and integrated into his landscapes. Although he was formally trained in a traditional art academy, his later works embrace his unique color sensibilities, displaying beautiful arrays of color in natural landscapes that were not entirely true to the eye. These works verge on Impressionism, but despite multiple trips to Italy throughout his life, Alt was not privy to the shifting art movements throughout Europe in the late 19th century.
