In 1893, Thorvald Erichsen and Oluf Wold-Torne traveled from their home in Norway to France and Italy to absorb the artistic innovations rapidly developing in those countries but stagnant in their own. While Wold-Torne eventually returned to and settled in Norway, Erichsen continue to travel, never settling in one place. This may account for the turn-of-the-century artist’s continuous change in subject matter (from nudes, to landscapes, to still lives), and his similar shifts in color palette—although he is broadly considered a Post-Impressionist. He was ultimately more successful than Wold-Torne, selling and exhibiting his work throughout Europe until his death in 1939.
