Josef Navrátil was a 19th century Czech painter whose paintings adorned the interiors of prominent buildings in Prague, such as the Prague Castle, the imperial castle in Zákupy, and the Postal Museum. Though’s most known for his still lifes, he’s likely more acclaimed for his landscapes. Through his career, Navrátil showed a deep appreciation for nature with his soft but bright color pallet. His style verged on Impressionism, as he focused on depicting light as he saw it and unapologetically kept his brushstrokes visible. Despite working on prestigious projects, Navrátil never became a widely praised artist, living his life in poverty.
