Giovanni di Paolo was one of Sienna’s foremost painters during the early Italian Renaissance. Di Paolo’s style is characterized by elongated figures reminiscent of Medieval works. These stiff, realistically rendered forms give his paintings and frescos an otherworldly quality, without sacrificing the Renaissance’s values of naturalism. He was understudied in the decades after his death but his fame re-emerged in the art historical canon in the 20th century.
