John Hodgson Lobley was an English painter mostly known for his 120 paintings of wounded soldiers and medical efforts commissioned by Britain’s Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I. His paintings are revered for capturing the emotional, grim realities of war. Lobley’s hospital paintings in no way glorify war since the scenes were void of exciting explosions or dramatic heroism; they are instead quiet and slow. After the war, Lobley’s paintings remained soft, often subjecting pleasant views of London or portraits of his wife.
