Because his real name is unknown, art historians have dubbed one of Caravaggio’s earliest followers, Cecco del Caravaggio. There is debate surrounding the artist’s nationality, but many believe he was French. The artist never signed or dated his works, so it is difficult to put together his oeuvre, but generally, it is thought that he painted both religious scenes as well as scenes of the everyday life of commoners. As can be expected, his work is largely influenced by Caravaggio, meaning he paints with intense naturalism and drama as well as high contrasts of light and dark.
