Willem van der Vliet was a painter and draftsman during the Dutch Golden Age, a period dominated by still lifes, lush landscapes, and genre paintings. Van der Vliet was born in Delft, South Holland, the resting place for another Netherlandish painter of the same period, Johannes Vermeer. Willem van der Vliet was known mostly for his portraits, which were painted against a dark, shadowed background.
