In the late 16th and early 17th century, Orazio Gentileschi executed some of the most revered paintings in the Renaissance style of Caravaggio—academic precision, piercing primary colors, and dramatic contrasts between light and shadow. A successful painter and educator in Italy, Gentileschi trained his daughter Artemisia who is remembered as one of very few prominent, Western female artists of the Renaissance. Later in his career, he moved to France and then England (where he eventually died) and became one of the Queen of England’s favorite artists to commission for murals.
