Dirck van Baburen was a Dutch Golden Age figure painter who worked in the vein of Caravaggio. Despite his career’s brevity (he died at the age of 30), van Baburen’s works represent a wide range of figurative paintings of the Baroque era and Dutch Golden Age; he painted historical scenes, biblical narratives, ancient myths, and popularized genre painting in Utrecht, his hometown. Genre works portray everyday scenes like domestic interiors, the lives of prostitutes and gamblers, and street musicians.
