The son of Tiffany & Co. founder Charles Lewis Tiffany, Louis Comfort Tiffany was destined for a career in design, but notably rejected a life working for his family’s renowned company. After studying painting under George Inness, Tiffany switched to glassmaking, decorative arts, and interior design by the 1870s. His mosaics and stained glassworks helped define the Aesthetic movement and Arte Nouveau style. Tiffany is renowned for his ability to achieve detail and compositional harmony with rigid material in a painterly manner. His hand is instantly recognizable for his stylized leaves and opalescent colors.
