Jonas Bendiksen
Jonas Bendiksen’s practice can be described as photojournalism-meets-art. Over his 22-year career, the Norwegian photographer has focused on documenting isolated societies, traveling to remote corners of the globe and photographing workers, people in poverty, celebrations, and self-proclaimed second-comings of Christ. His photographs often appear surreal—perhaps doctored—at first glance, but viewers slowly make sense of the unbelievable interaction between human and animal (like in Abkhazia, 2005) and extreme, unique environments (like Russia, Altai Territory, 2000). In the past few years, Bendiksen has applied an art-installation sensibility to his documentary works. In recent exhibitions, he has created three-dimensional interactive spaces that display his photographs along with voice recordings and video projections to create a more immersive experience. Bendiksen lives outside Oslo and works throughout the world. He is an active member of Magnum.
