Roger Fenton

Roger Fenton was Britain’s foremost photographer in the 1850s. He traveled to Russia, photographing Russian architecture and the Crimean Wars in addition to his wide array of landscapes, portraits, still lives, and reportage. Fenton was a master at capturing sublime lighting in landscapes, minute detail in architecture, the realities of war, and the theatrics of posed Orientalist tableaus. Fenton’s early contributions to photography helped establish the medium as a legitimate form of expression, not just a means of documentation.
