Mattia Preti was a Baroque, “Caravaggist,” painter who lived and worked in Italy and Malta. He was successful during his lifetime, receiving commissions from all over Europe. His dramatically lit and emotional narrative paintings are typical of Baroque artists and followers of Caravaggio. Later in his career, he abandoned the Caravaggio tradition of oil paintings, and began painting frescoes on the interiors of churches.
