Mattia Preti was a Baroque, “Caravaggist,” painter who lived and worked in Italy and Malta. He was successful during his lifetime, receiving commissions from all over Europe. Later in his career, he abandoned the Caravaggio tradition of oil paintings, and began painting frescoes on the interiors of churches.
