John La Farge
John La Farge was an American painter, stained-glass maker, writer, and decorator in the late 19th century. He was one of the first American artists to study and adapt East Asian arts into his work. After traveling to Japan, the South Pacific, and Hawaii, La Farge became particularly interested Japanese prints, imitating their flattened space and large areas of color in his paintings. A simultaneously cosmopolitan and deeply Christian man, La Farge designed stained glass windows for a variety of churches throughout America, and translated the jewel tones of his glasswork into his paintings.
