Jules Bastien-Lepage was a French naturalist painter in the latter half of the 19th century. His forms adhered to academic rules of the human figure, but he eschewed idealism. This choice—combined with his subjects, who varied in societal class—made Bastien-Lepage a grandfather of the Realist movement that emerged just after the height of his career.
