Gerbrand van den Eeckhout was a painter in the 1600s’ Dutch Golden Age. A favorite student of Rembrandt, experts can barely distinguish Van den Eeckhout’s early paintings from those of his master. He painted historical, mythological, and narrative biblical scenes with high levels of shadow and drama. He enveloped himself in the arts throughout his life and is also remembered as an art collector, critic, and amateur poet.
